HEART OF THE WORLD: JOURNEYS TO PERU
At this time, we have no scheduled trips. Inquire if you are interested in any future journeys.
We offer a 17-day journey to the Andes. (Itinerary follows & dates to be announced.)
We include time in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incas, Machu Picchu, various sites in the Sacred Valley, as well as several days with Wiñay Taki Ayllu, our Peruvian friends in the village of Pisaq, who are living in a deep connection with traditional Andean culture.
This is not an ordinary ‘guided tour.’ Our purpose in leading groups is twofold: to share with you places and experiences that have been life-changing for us; and to introduce you to Wiñay Taki, a group who keep alive the ancient teachings of the Andes. We expect to participate in Andean ceremonies that help us to open our hearts and re-connect to Mother Earth. Peru and the Sacred Valley carry special energies of healing and love, and our intention is to share this experience and build a bridge between our cultures.
We would like to emphasize that this journey is a group experience, and we expect those who join us to participate in the group process. Each person’s unique presence and contribution is an important part of the total experience and taking our time to honor this and create our own community is the Andean way.
Below is the itinerary for the journey, as well as details on how to reserve a place. There may be some changes along the way.
We created a website journal (a ‘blog’) for our journeys in the past. If you’d like to get a sense of the trip we’ll be taking, take a look at www.heartoftheworld.blogspot.com
If you have any questions about the journey in 2012, please phone or email us.

ITINERARY
Heart of the World Journey to Peru, (dates to be announced)
Day 1: Friday
You leave home base and we will meet in Lima. When you arrive in Lima we will meet you, or arrange for you to be met at the Lima International airport. Note that Peru is two hours ahead of Pacific Time. We will stay overnight at a Hotel in Miraflores, a pleasant area of Lima beside the Pacific ocean.
Day 2. Saturday
We arrive in Cusco and go directly to Pension Alemana, in the San Blas district for coca tea and a rest. Remember to drink lots of water. We will be at 3,300 meters (11,000 ft) so it is a good idea to take it easy the first day. There are lots of restaurants within easy walking distance so we can walk to dinner.
Day 3 & 4: Sunday & Monday
We enjoy Cusco and the surrounding area. We can wander around the streets in this Inca capital; visit some of the old Inca sites both within and outside the city. These include the Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Quenko, and Tambomachay. There is a lot to see and do to experience in and around this ancient and sacred capital of the Incas.
Day 5: Tuesday
We leave Cusco by minivan after breakfast and travel to Ollantaytambo, via visits to the weaving village of Chinchero and the magical ruins of Moray in the hills overlooking the mountain range of the Sacred Valley.
Day 6, 7, & 8: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
We go by train to Aguas Calientes (the little town at the base of the mountain to Machu Picchu) . We’ll stay at our hotel for three nights, which will give us two whole days at Machu Picchu. We can also enjoy the local hot springs (bring towel and bathing suit for this).
Day 9 & 10: Saturday, and Sunday
We leave Machu Picchu by train on Saturday morning and arrive in Ollantaytambo. We will stay for two nights at El Alberge, a pleasant little hotel owned by Wendy Weeks, an old friend of Carol’s, where we can integrate our journey thus far before meeting Wiñay Taki. There are interesting Inca ruins in Ollantaytambo and an ancient Inca town to explore.
Day 11, 12, 13, & 14: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
After breakfast, we leave by minibus along the Vilcanota (Urubamba) River for Pisaq at the other end of the Sacred Valley. It is 100 km along the valley, and takes about two hours drive. In Pisaq we’ll stay on the village square at the Hotel Pisaq, visit the Inca ruins above the village, watch the world go by in the marketplace and spend time with Wiñay Taki, our Peruvian friends who live there.
Day 15: Friday
We return to Cusco from Pisaq (about an hour drive) and to the Pensión Alemana where we enjoy our last night in Cuzco. We will have our farewell dinner with anyone be staying on in Peru.
Day 16: Saturday
On Saturday morning, you fly Lan Peru from Cusco, to Lima. We will book a couple of day rooms in Lima, so we can leave our luggage and rest there. There may be some time to go shopping in Lima during the day at an indigenous market. Before returning to the airport, we go for a ‘farewell to Peru’ celebratory meal at the Rosa Nautica, a beautiful restaurant at the end of a pier over the Pacific Ocean.
Day 16 & 17: Saturday or Sunday
You depart from Lima back to your home base. Most flights to North America depart late at night on Saturday or very early on Sunday morning usually between midnight and 1 a.m. so you arrive back in North America Sunday morning for your connecting flights.
